In Between

Marek Hemmann // Freude am Tanzen
Format // CD // 2xLP
The first LP is always a reason to celebrate, and also grounds for elated expectation (for more, of course): and now, respect is in order because here is the double premier. The first LP from Marek Hemmann, the multifaceted electro-tinkerer near side of the Saale River, and as well the first CD-Long player from the house of FAT! We know Marek Hemmann is solo as well as half of the congenial duo Hemmann & Kaden, who for years have been the pillars of the new house & techno scene, both as producer and live act. The complete releases are in the meantime around a dozen; the innumerable remix business for colleagues from Trentem¯ller to Monika Kruse can it be counted. After the most recent EP, the floor storming Gemini, it was clear that the time is now to get a load of the night fulfilling complete artwork. On to the in between. What Mr. Hemmann offers here on technoid material, despite the stacked title, is but a small universe. Not quite a snack, but rather right in the middle we find ourselves standing in an eclectic house-world, which in every corner offers a new discovery. From classic deep-droning dub epos over the ëfrizzed-upí house with Bossa shots and demanding horn action up to highly complex sample tone-art. Yes, it is a long trip through techno-land; one in which Marek takes us along, and one which it must be said, is quite wonderful. In the best way. With a round of wholly comprehensive melancholy, it comes over us like a sunrise through the broken club doors after a completely danced-through night. That happens often enough, but for the swinging beauty and manually-labored final touch, flashes forth Mr. Hemmann's golden hands, bringing back the hypnotic bass lines. The humming monotony lives, as does the subconscious when it says to us: Stay! Move your ass! And look, what beauteous northern melodies there on the horizon. Then the sun arises. Blazing through those same - broken club doors... Thank you Mr. Hemmann! 1 Alias A soft-trance mid tempo opener, pure, trimmed of frills, with a fat bass and embellished with a dose of dub elements, perfect for the calm, but compelling in its groove. 2 Tagoma From tight-fitting tango- and Bossa elements of a fundamental monster funk, with a driving accordion dub, and a dose of ironic live voice snippets. 3 Kaleido The tempo entices: from there springs the plucked bass line, which is piped jazzy, where congas and voice fragments are out front and the sheet metal horn fraction conclude the quick and lively jazz-house action. 4 Compass This is what house-hypnosis looks like: a veritable start in space, with savory free places, circling voices, tracing fat synthies and extremely compelling rhythm fundamentals. A piece which brings true happiness. 5 Inessa Club culture in a pure form: narrow, reduced grooves, a sharp beat crazily brought smooth, and a built-in vocal invite you to the dance. 6 Gemini Caution, summer hit alert! The nevermore forgotten on many floors, cranium boring techno invasion, classic with completely DEEP sitting synthies, and on the top a free swinging freaky sax. 7 Yvette Yvette must be wonderful: an artfully swung piece of hyperactive tone art, with inverse sound loops, swan screeches and xylophone. Everything is framed by crammed rave planes on an irresistible electro groove. 8 Swarm Over-bassed, plucky grooves clamor in a swarm of golden electro bugs, errant and also a little threatening in all of its complex glory. All is fired from a mercilessly melancholic, but driven organ pitch. 9 NTMYT Down to earth, after all of the meandering to an earnest, crackling bass, to monotones and hyper movement inducing down grooves with a real song quality. 10 Down The screamingly beautiful last dance, full of longing melancholy and eternity, with swinging melodies, vibrating piped bells, underground deep bass and broken grooves.
