Back From Beyond

Blackstrobe // Supersoul Recordings
Blackstrobe are 'Back From Beyond'. Their newest dance floor gems are a foray back into the darkest realms of disco. Nevermind that only two years ago they were busy making rock with norwegian black-metal connotations: this is the NOW Blackstrobe. They have returned with a new 12" that revisits their unique blend of boogietrance, softgoth, gaybiker house music. On their latest release they employ deep gothy hooks that match perfectly with a nostalgic italo flair and dark disco pulses. Dancefloor zombies and casual listeners should find these retro-futurist tracks akin to the worlds of John Carpenter and The Twilight Zone. The A-side 'Back From Beyond' establishes the sinister tone right away with it's alarming hook and dark groove. The pulsating arpeggiated bass, the kicking four-on-the-floor and the distorted italo synth make this track plump for peaktime. Not to mention that drummer Benjamin Beaulieu's ventilating drums generate an authenticity that is seldomly associated with electronica. On the flipside the introverted vibe of 'Demonstration Track' serves as counterpoint to the darkroom atmosphere of the A-side. Rebotini's eerie synth riffs, the score-like stringmachines and the suggestive vocal demonstrate a villainous complexion that is rounded off with a Detroit beatdown groove. Lastly there is the pristine digital only release 'Sometimes Funky People Are Dressed In Black'. This track's airy synths and disco percussion show a more spacey and cosmic side of Blackstrobe.
