Things To Come

Things to Come follows hot on the heels of his recent monstrous release Donko Donko. Where Donko Donko is primal and to the point, the Things to Come release poses a firm challenge to the audience, who gets to witness Skatebård venturing into unexplored territories. The result is a complex and insistent set of tracks that pendulate between the aggressively rhythmic and the creepingly melodic. The title track is a dark, alluring foray into an aural landscape that might evoke pagan rituals deep in endless forests just as well as postmodern angst drowned out by urban noise. A shaking rhythm track further emphasizes its dark and puzzling uneasiness. The mood quickly changes in the follow-up track Reindeer Salsa. The track's name alone is enough to tickle the senses, although one does not know whether to envision dancing tundra animals or meat-flavored garnish. Reindeer Salsa is propelled forward by a maximalist rhythm track that is kept in place by a wonderful minimalistic melodic line reminiscent of Skatebård's Kosmos single. A mildly disturbing vocal sample underlines its manic and somewhat psychedelic mantraness. Skatebård completes the trio of original tracks on the release with the more discreet The Party Trap, which in spite of an energetic beat slides mystically forward with a hypnotic melody and acidesque bass sounds. The release also includes two remixes. First, Bergen's own disco prince Velferd gives Reindeer Salsa a tight and synth-heavy makeover that lures out a hidden structure within the track. It builds percussively and repetitively towards an ecstatic musical boiling point. The second remix is courtesy of American producer Sferro, who transforms The Party Trap into a rich oasis of synth chords and melody lines that trigger images of sunsets, vintage racer cars and hitherto unknown galaxies. Also, look out for a stand-alone release featuring a remix of Reindeer Salsa by avant-garde nu-discoers The Knights of Jumungus (A.K.A. Mungolian Jet Set), which is due out one week after the Things to Come release. Skatebård's journey through his very own musical landscape - topographically composed by varying doses of techno, house, electro, italo and synthpop - keeps on taking new turns. Things to Come are now among the things that are. Where will Skatebård take us next?
