(ANGELO BADALAMENTI) There are 8 new titles on Stefan Schwander's latest album "The Blackout Quintet", all composed by the techno dandy himself. This is Schwander's fourth album (not including the 12" CD compilation "Me, the disco machine") under the alias ANTONELLI. The music on "The Blackout Quintet" is best described not just as haunting but as positively ghostly. It is set in the hours of transition between day and night, in that shadowy no man's land from dusk to darkness or darkness to dawn. This emphasis on time and time passing is reflected not just in the music but in the titles of the tracks themselves: After the night, The morning, The quiet night, Gespenster (ghosts). And to project day and night metaphor onto the techno or club context, the music could be said to belong somewhere between dancefloor and after-hours, or even to that private zone after after-hours when the party is over and you're floating gently back to reality. ANTONELLI's dreamy melodies create feelings of abandon and paranoia at the same time. In two pieces (Topaz, The Wave), the intensity of the music is generated by a synphonic, feedback-like wall of sound, which builds up in layer upon insistent layer. Other tracks on "The Blackout Quintet" (e.g. After the night) recall the music of Angelo Badalamenti, the film composer beloved of David Lynch (Twin Peaks, Mullholland Drive) who is also celebrated for his pop music (including songs for the Pet Shop Boys). More than anything in fact, "The Blackout Quintet" does beg to be described as film music, despite there being no film to go with it, nothing to give the music a concrete visual structure and nothing to subordinate it to or put it on a level with images and events. Indeed, "The Blackout Quintet" is intentionally self-sufficient, and as a result achieves that freedom and breadth which enables music to put its listeners into a state of semi-delirium, allowing them, if they are lucky enough, to catch a glimpse of a ghost or two. Stefan Schwander is one of the most versatile producers and live performers on the international electronic scene. His projects, including "Rhythm_Maker"(Techno), Repeat Orchestra (House), A Rocket in Dub (Dub) and The Bad Examples (Exotica) have enjoyed releases on various labels, and his techno venture Pop Up with Jörg Burger (The Modernist) has attracted much positive attention. He is currently working, under the alias of Swimmingpool, on a new album with Michael Scheibenreiter (Phoneheads). ANTONELLI is his main project though, and Schwander has spent a lot of time over the last few years taking it live to cities as far afield as Tokyo, Barcelona, Madrid, Paris, London and Copenhagen. He plays a rocking, euphoria-inducing techno set as ANTONELLI, and his numerous 12"s have provided us with one club hit after another (Automatic Music, The Vogue feat. Miss Kittin, Kung Fu…). He is also very active on the remix front, and has cooperated with Michael Mayer, Freestyle Man, Farben, Lawrence, Steve Bug, Ego Express, Elektro Musik Department, Oliver Hacke, Error Error, Mondo Grosso to name but a few. Album (plus die 12" CD Compilation "Me, the disco machine") unter seinem alias ANTONELLI . Die Musik auf "The Blackout Quintet" kann als "gespenstig" oder "geisterhaft" beschrieben werden. Sie spielt im Übergang zur Dunkelheit zwischen Tag und Nacht und umgekehrt. Diese zeitliche Festlegung ist auch sehr trefflich in den Songtiteln formuliert: After the night, The morning, The quit night, Gespenster. Wenn man das Bild von Tag und Nacht auf den Techno- oder Clubkontext übertragen möchte findet die Musik irgendwo zwischen Club und Afterhour oder sogar auch erst nach der Afterhour im Privaten im Zustand nach dem Rausch statt. ANTONELLI's verträumte Melodien erzeugen Gefühle von Hingabe und Paranoia zugleich. Die Intensität seiner Musik wird bei zwei Stücken (Topaz, The Wave) durch einen synphonischen, feedbackartigen Wall of Sound erzeugt, der sich repetetiv übereinander schichtet. Andere Stücke auf "The Blackout Quintet" (z.b. "The Blackout Quintet" muß man zuallererst auch als Filmmusik beschreiben, jedoch gibt es dazu keinen Film, der die Musik in eine konkrete visuelle Struktur einfügt oder sie der Visualität unterordnet oder gleichsetzt. "The Blackout Quintet" bleibt gewollt sich alleine überlassen und schafft so die Freiheit und Weite, die es Musik ermöglicht den Menschen in einen rauschhaften und sensiblen Zustand zu versetzten und sie führt im besten Falle auch dazu, Gespenster zu sehen. Stefan Schwander ist einer der vielseitigsten Produzenten und Live-Acts in der internationalen elektronischen Clubkultur.
