(en) Misc. have come home from their stay in the Sinus Hotel, and you might say they've returned with a vengeance: the Sabotage EP marks the Cologne duo's 13th release for their longtime home, and it's every bit as intense as the occasion calls for. But don't be afraid: Misc. have backed off the brutalism on this one, continuing to explore precision-engineered sound design while locking into what might just be the most infectious tracks of their career. Kicking it all off is "Sabotage", with clattering percussion that sounds like hail on a corrugated tin roof, and an eerie chromatic chord progression that falls like a summer rain on the day after the Apocalypse. Animated by echoes of acid house, the track positively screams "Rave strikes back!" "Schichtdienst" eases off the throttle to settle into a low-slung groove. Sonar pings map a position squarely at the center of European minimal-techno traditions, while a generous sense of swing keeps the invitation to dance wide open. "Parfumdisco" at once one of Misc.'s subtlest tracks yet, and also one of their most immediate. Expect to be hearing a lot of this one in strobe-lit main rooms and darkened basements. If the makers of bungee cords ever hear this song, they may well ask for their elastic back: its bassline is the rubberiest thing you'll hear all year. Misc. don't leave you hanging, though: they swoop in with a ridiculous series of sawtoothed riffs that promise to tear across dance floors like sharpened lightning. Closing out the EP is "Double Tongue," a nimble groover animated by pulverized vocal samples and a rising-and-falling bassline that rolls like marbles across the deck of a ship at sea. Poised on the dividing line between darkness and light, it's the perfect representation of its title and the perfect way to close out a record that makes such mischief with a smile.

Beseelt durch Acid-House-Echos schreit dieser Track geradezu: "Rave strikes back!" "Schichtdienst schaltet dann einen Gang runter in einen etwas sanfteren Groove. Die Radar-Geräusche zeigen deutlich eine Position inmitten europäischer Minimal-Techno Tradition an, während ein großzügiger Schub Swing die Tür zur Tanzfläche weit offen lässt. "Parfumdisco" ist einer von Misc.s feinsinnigsten Tracks, und gleichzeitig einer ihrer direktesten. Stellt euch darauf ein, ihn demnächst öfter in Strobo-beleuchteten Main-Floors und dunklen Kellern zu hören. Wenn die Hersteller von Bungeeseilen diesen Track jemals zu vorgespielt bekommen, werden sie womöglich ihren Gummi zurückfordern: die Bassline ist vielleicht das Dehnbarste, was es dieses Jahr zu hören gibt. Dennoch lassen Misc. einen nicht hängen: ganz lässig rasselt eine Serie von sägezahnartigen Riffs herab, die verspricht, über Tanzflächen hinwegzufegen wie ein scharfer Blitz. Beschlossen wird die EP mit "Double Tongue", einem flinken Groover, animiert von zerriebenen Vocal Samples und einer auf- und absteigenden Bassline, die rollt wie Murmeln über ein Schiff auf hoher See. Balanciert auf der Trennlinie zwischen Hell und Dunkel ist er die ideale Verkörperung seines Titels und die perfekte Art, eine Platte abzuschließen, die soviel Unheil mit einem Lächeln anrichtet.
