(en) Monodub is a new project by an Cologne artist. His tracks contain the kind of hazy foreboding atmosphere which keeps you pulling along until the very end. There are no stunts no fancy automations in these tracks. So his project name sort of makes 100% sense. Listening to both tracks you can feel Monodub´s sharp eye for details. When he adds these dark sounds that rise from the ground and disappear you notice that all is perfectly timed. The a-side track "Monkey Business" is a 12 minute bass heavy groover really stripped down to the essentials. The track really works in full perfection and creates an almost narrative energy. Monodub`s great mixing abilities enable him to work with rather simple sounds in such an efficient way it makes you shiver. "Monkey Business" is a wonderful track by a person who is at no time acting up but stays in the background, although you can feel his presence all the time. The flipside track "Electric Banana" is similar in style. As "Monkey Business" it floats effortless and slightly builds up tension towards the end. The big difference is the musical theme, the sequences seems to meet at some point creating a stronger liveliness. "Electric Banana" is funky with the beats and static at the same time. (de) Dies ist ein neues Projekt eines Kölners der sich Monodub nennt. Seine Stücke verkörpern eine trübe, dunkle Stimmung und installieren so etwas wie eine Vorahnung auf das Kommende. Nicht zuletzt läuft alles auf dieses Ziel hinaus. Wer aber denkt, dass dies in einem Funken sprühendes Finale endet oder in einer Tod bringenden Automation, der hat sich geirrt, denn das ist nicht der Stil von Monodub. Monodub bleibt cool und weiß mit wenigen Elementen viel zu bewegen und so sind seine beiden Stücke bewegender als so vieles andere zurzeit. Dies ist geradezu erfrischend würde man doch am liebsten an bestimmten Tagen alle Stücke mit Automationen verbannen. Seine A-Seite "Monkey Business" ist ein zwölf minütiges Groove Stück, das derart reduziert ist, dass mehr wohl nicht geht. Mit einer Präzision und Perfektion erzeugt es eine erzählerische Dichte, die Gänsehaut bewirkt. Mondubs unglaubliche Fähigkeit Sounds zu mixen und als Ganzes zu präsentieren tun das Seinige, um dem Stücke eine einmalige Präsenz zu verleihen. "Monkey Business" ist von einer Person geschrieben, die zu keinem Zeitpunkt die Notwendigkeit verspürt sich ins Scheinwerferlicht zu drängeln und dennoch verspürt man die ganze Zeitz seine Anwesenheit. Die Rückseite der Platte "Electric Banana" verhält sich ähnlich, ist statisch aber zugleich funkig und hypnotisch, erzeugt allerdings durch die Schnittmenge von verschiedenen Sounds die zum gleichen Zeitpunkt auftauchen eine stärkere, dringlichere Atmosphäre, die etwas vom frühem Chicago House in der Form von Tim Harper oder Santonio hat. Natürlich alles in einer aktualisierten Form und entsprechendem Sound Design, das vielleicht von allen Elementen in seinen Stücken noch das direkteste und aktivste ist. Wir haben den Eindruck, dass Monodubs Debüt Platte gerade erst der Anfang ist!
