Finka Ep
Chizh & Cast // Sender Records

// 12"
We offer a big welcome to Sender's new artist duo, Chizh & Cast. We have to admit that we know very little about them other than that they come from Russia. Fire, wind and rocks: Chizh & Cast's tracks trigger visions of nature. They fill the room with dynamic tension, as if one is wandering through a vast landscape with a nasty fever. Finka is the soundtrack to a murder mystery set firmly within this landscape. The core of the track is a melody that takes root in the central nervous system - in its depths, a subterranean bubbling sound with a rattlesnake hiss and the sound of a noisy flock of ravens climbing high against a red evening sky. 'Let's carry on', the dancer's words reach us as if they are burnt onto photographic plates. Her movements flow. She stumbles grotesquely and with purpose. She is both statue and whirlwind. Peznia Bez Slov, with its subtly displaced guitar, simmers like magma. However the relief does not come in the form of an explosive eruption, but rather through the inhalation of the rising fumes. Samurai Jack is a chameleon. The track begins with a thoroughly urban collage of samples from Asian action films and a beat that is reminiscent of the classic Sender 003 track Auf Empfang. Free from self-referential excrescence, the track develops swiftly into an extremely atmospheric moment. As the track clanks along, a bass cuts in. It combines melancholia, groove and a feel for melody in the most charming fashion. Although a defiant guitar confronts the world's injustices, the wheels still have to turn. Although we have returned to the city, maybe the Finka EP ultimately reflects a yearning for peace and quiet…
