Experiment Musik
Axel Bartsch // Sportclub

In times of apparently unlimited possibilities of latest production techniques and countless samples and loops it is a matter of axels concern to take a step back and to limit himself, away from the stereotype clean computer production sound trying to conceive the music as an attemp, as an experiment. On his second solo album he abstains from the omnipresent bongo loops, native singing and white noize attacks and returns to drum machine and melody, that runs through Axel´s works like a common thread. Wether in the beginning as Vanguard (together with Asem Shama), his Kompakt catalogue, his first solo album "Kiss" on Karmarouge in 2008 or newish releases on Sportclub, Suol, Get Physical or Ostwind it´s always melodies which give his tracks a special mood and distance them from the usual dj tools. That´s why "Experiment Musik" is not a stringing together of dance tracks which got sqeezed into the album format but it delievers various facettes and works not only in the club but also at home. This intimates the titel track right away that can´t be referred to any category and where a classic analogue hookline gets coupled with an experimental harp performance framed by a 4 to the floor beat at 105 bpm. Similar come "Morgengebet", where you could imagine a group of monks prying in trance at the sunrise, and "Femme Fatale" that is only carried by synth sounds and a fetish like voice. Of course Axel did not forget what his name stands for and delievers food for the dancefloor too. Leading, what a suprise, is the first single "Wir Tanzen" who´s vocals remind of Gabi Delgado/DAF and gets put in the limelight in a new robe by david labeij and schäufler&zovsky. "Keep That Feeling" where Axel took a piece of a thomas schumacher interview and works it up in a "loosing control" way caused already irrepressible spirits at all open airs. With "mental trainer", a pure piece of techno, axel shows that he can also do it in a ddifferent way bud in the lower operation speed range. More housy but not less danceable it is getting with "prophetic dreams" where it seems as if move d would have taken part. Or "sparkling energy", an ode to the power of music and love, where axel´s wife lauren contributed the vocals. Slightly more playful are the bells of jericho and the 13th sign, where a glockenspiel (bells) and a harp dictate the flow and jump through the tracks in a tipsy way. The circle is complete with the slow-tech-punk track "yeahwoodya" that is only available as digital download. With this album axel sticks to his way and marks off the release insanity of the mp3 portals, whom he is subject to every week in his search for good music as a dj, in a refreshing way and builds his own freedom that he would not only likes to share in his sets anymore. Enjoy!
